The ministry of Lector was established by Pope Paul VI in 1972. He charged the lectors with this responsibility: "Let the reader be aware of the office undertaken and make every effort and employ suitable means to acquire that increasingly warm and living love and knowledge of Scripture that will make him or her a more perfect disciple of the Lord" ("Ministeria Quaedam"). This statement is a call for the Lector to love and know the Bible and to live its message in daily life.
The Lector serves the needs of God's family gathered to be nourished with his Word. The Lector's ministry demands far more than the ability to read well in public or a technically correct reading. Through prayerful preparation, Lectors open themselves to the Holy Spirit that through the Grace of God they may offer a faith-filled proclamation that communicates the intellectual, emotional and aesthetic content of the reading, thereby making the Word come alive to the community. Such proclamation serves to nourish and strengthen the faith of the worshiping community.
